Saying Goodbyes in Lembena

For the past 2+ years we have lived among the Lembena people and it has been encouraging to develop deeper friendships with them and gain a deeper understanding of their language and culture. We still have much to learn about speaking their language and understanding their worldview but we have been encouraged with what we are able to understand and communicate. Even though we were looking forward to returning to our home country, it was hard to say goodbye to our closest friends in the village and they made us promise again and again that we would not forget them and that we would come back and finish what we started. So we said goodbye to our teammates, who we left alone in the village, and to the Lembena people, climbed into the small Kodiak airplane and began the long trip back the US.

Being Refreshed by Family and Friends

We made it back to Washington State in early June and it has been so good to feel all of the stress of living in the middle of the jungle for the past two years wash away as we have been refreshed by getting together with fellow believers. Our transition back has been incredibly smooth thanks to our amazing church family! We arrived to a completely furnished house, food in the pantry and toys in the kids’ rooms. Declan and Addy were running around the house like it was Christmas morning showing us all the cool things that they had in their rooms (and this was 1 o’clock in the morning after having travelled over 10,000 miles).

We were able to reconnect with our coworkers, the Ferguson’s, who we hadn’t seen in over a year and get to spend some time with them before they headed back across the world to Papua New Guinea beginning of July. Praise God that they have made is safely back into Lembena! We have been able to reconnect with many of our good friends, family members and supporters already but there are many more that we still want to see while we are back.

Home Assignment Plans

During our time back, we hope to continue in language and culture study- reviewing and practicing practical expressions in the Lembena language, transcribing the many recordings we have collected while we were in the village and reviewing new stories provided by our teammates still in Lembena. We also hope to be able to reconnect with supporters, friends and churches while we are back and we already have several speaking engagements lined up. We know that people have busy schedules but, if you have the time and desire, we would love to see you! Please reach out and connect with us and we can get together for a meal or coffee or anything you’d like!

Our plan is to be in the States through Christmas and the New Year before heading back to Lembena. We look forward to seeing you!

  • Pray for our team in Lembena. Pray for endurance and wisdom as they continue to work on learning the Lembena language and culture. Pray for unity for our team and for the hearts of the Lembena people.
  • Praise that our teammates are back together again! The Hughes were alone in our village for over a month and just last week, the Ferguson’s were able to rejoin them. The Ferguson’s had several unforeseen delays in returning to Papua New Guinea but God provided a way for them to make it back.
  • Pray for our time back in the United States. Pray that we can reconnect with our sending churches, supporters, friends and family. Pray that God will raise up new supporters to join our team.
  • Praise: We are so thankful for the Body of Christ. It has been so good to be able to worship and fellowship with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

In His Strength and Power Alone,

Micah, Laura, Adalia and Declan
